Thoth is a manuscript evaluation tool created in Python. It uses natural language processing (NLP) packages like NLTK to generate a report highlighting strengths and weaknesses in your manuscript.
Current Requirements:
- The MS must be a Microsoft Word doc (.docx)
- App only available on Windows
- Your MS must have chapters with the titles formatted as Header 1
Installation
Installation is simple, but it will take some time. The link above directs you to a zip file stored on my Dropbox. After you’ve downloaded the file, extract it to your preferred destination on your local drive. There will be two files within the extracted folder: a subdirectory named ‘thoth’, which contains all the guts of the application, and a batch file named ‘thoth-launcher’.
Running the App
Double-click the ‘thoth-launcher’ file to run the application. After a brief wait, you should see a wizard with a first page like this:

The fields will be blank – add the name of your Word MS file to the first field (click on the folder button to open a file chooser), then choose a directory for the PDF report file. Once you click the ‘Run’ button, you should see a progress page like this:

Processing your MS should take anywhere from 5-30 minutes, depending on its length.
The Report
The application’s output is a PDF file with a series of reports, giving you detailed information about your MS. These reports include balance of dialogue vs. narrative, usage of adjectives/adverbs, and more.
Here is an example of a report from my latest MS, Plague of Cataclysms:
